Applied Analytics Immersion for High School Coders

College-Level Analytics. High School Students.
The Applied Analytics Immersion for High School Coders (AAI4HC) is the Callais Institute's flagship pre-college program — a two-week, residential summer experience that places high school juniors and seniors inside a real university analytics environment.
Participants learn Python, SQL, and machine learning fundamentals, work with real datasets from New Orleans and Louisiana, and present a final analytics project to a panel of faculty and industry judges on the last day.
The program is intentionally small (20 students per cohort) to provide intensive mentorship, and is offered at no cost to qualifying students from under-resourced schools through partnerships with the Louisiana Department of Education and local foundations.
Who Should Apply?
Rising high school juniors and seniors with at least one year of programming experience (Python, JavaScript, or similar) and a strong interest in data science or analytics.

Two-Week Curriculum
Each week builds on the last — from foundations to final project.
Foundations & Exploration
- Day 1–2 Python for data: pandas, NumPy, data wrangling with messy Louisiana datasets
- Day 3–4 SQL fundamentals: querying, joining, aggregating real business databases
- Day 5 Exploratory data analysis and visualization with matplotlib and Seaborn
- Evening Panel dinner with Loyola analytics faculty and industry mentors
Machine Learning & Final Project
- Day 6–7 Intro to machine learning: supervised models, evaluation metrics, scikit-learn
- Day 8–9 Team project work: dataset selection, analysis, modeling, and visualization
- Day 10 Final presentations to faculty and industry judges; certificates awarded
- Evening Closing reception with families and program alumni

Who Can Apply?

Current high school juniors or seniors
Rising 11th or 12th graders.

At least one year of Python, JavaScript, or equivalent in an academic or self-directed setting.

No specific GPA cutoff — we look for demonstrated curiosity and motivation in the application essay.

Ability to participate in-person
The program is fully residential on Loyola's campus. Limited commuter spots available upon request.
COST & FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The full program cost is covered by the Callais Institute for all admitted students. A housing deposit is required but refunded upon attendance. Need-based waivers available — contact us.
